Originating in the tropical areas and islands between Mexico and Brazil, Macaws are the largest of all the parrots. With life spans of 80 to 100 years for the larger Macaws such as the Green Winged Macaw and up to 40 years for Mini Macaws such as the Severe Mini Macaw, owning a Macaw is a lifetime commitment.
Cages for the Macaw require plenty of space and a Macaw should not be left alone in his cage for long periods of time. Considering this fact, apartment living is not recommended for Macaw owners.
Friendly and full of personality, a Macaw will test the level of his hierarchy amongst the humans in the home and will generally bond to one particular family member. Be prepared to invest a considerable amount of time with your Macaw.
A Macaw hand raised and trained from youth will often learn how to speak a few single words. Sentences should not be expected from a Macaw. This does not mean the Macaw is a quiet pet bird. The Macaw will often shriek loudly when frightened.
